Outright denials of legitimate claims and other shady practices by Workers Compensation Boards have devastated hundreds of thousands of families across Canada. (WCBs are not funded by taxpayers. They are funded by corporations.) It's a huge under-reported issue in Canada.
This is very similar to my brother. He worked as a cable guy, got short-term disability from lower back pain. He never could get long-term since it's not a visible disability. He can't lift ladders or carry his heavy tools and hardware. It's painful to sit in a chair at a desk, or sit and drive the truck, or even sit and watch TV. He was not working for about 8 months, trying to rehabilitate. WSIB decided that he should be able to go back to work and cut most of his pay. They told the company to find him a desk job (modified work), working less than regular hours, and being paid 1/3 or what he used to. None of that is from WSIB. Recently he's forced to go back to regular duties without ladders. So he has to call a tech to come and climb ladders for him if the job entails it. No doctor has cleared him to do work.
Thankyou for this excellent video. As a person who represents injured workers, it has been my experience that "deeming" creates poverty and creates emotional harm for workers who have been hurt at work and their families. All too often this includes the loss of the home and the fracturing of the family. Deeming hurts all injured workers, but especially those who are employed at low-waged worked at the time of injury. Who will speak up for injured workers?
